101 Somewhere Over The Sea

Rock & Roll Farming with Rachel Challoner

Tonight I’m absolutely thrilled to be heading up the most remote inhabited island in the British Isles, Fair Isle, to talk to crofter, Rachel Challoner @BarklandCroft

We talk about her early life in Lincolnshire, and how she initially trained to be a teacher, after studying music at university.

We then discuss how after realising that school teaching wasn’t for her, she ended up in the Royal Navy, sailing all over the World, before eventually transferring to the Army, where she taught Arabic to soldiers deploying to the Middle East.

And we then go into her life on Fair Isle at length, how she got there, the challenges of Island life, her croft and sheep, how she’s become a part of the community, and the importance of social media as a connection to the outside World.

All this and much, much more.

Rachel’s a real inspiration with how she’s made a life for herself in such an amazing, unique place, and it was a real pleasure to talk to her tonight. Check it out folks..
